The decision to bring in more healthy options is part of McDonald’s partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. McDonald’s said that it will only promote healthy drinks, such as water, milk and juice, with its Happy Meals. It will also change its advertising and packaging aimed toward children to highlight nutrition. The fast-food chain will also allow customers to switch out fries in Value Meals for side salads, fruits or vegetables. These changes will happen in McDonald’s 20 markets that represent 85% of its sales. These markets include the United States, China and the U.K. The changes are expected to be completed by 2020, reports The Wall Street Journal.
“Companies like McDonald’s play a powerful role in shaping the culture and environment that influences the health-related behaviors of young people,” Howell Wechsler, chief executive of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, told The New York Times.
