His team won two races as conference attendees waited in vain

In fact, the billionaire CEO of software giant Oracle (ORCL) is such a fan of the sport that on Tuesday, he left attendees of the annual Oracle OpenWorld conference waiting in vain for him to deliver a keynote speech. While his customers waited, Ellison was watching his yachting team compete in the second day of America’s Cup races, the Associated Press notes.

About 45 minutes after Ellison was scheduled to take the stage to address attendees, an Oracle executive informed the crowd that he wouldn’t be coming.

The OpenWorld conference is major event that draws 60,000 Oracle customers to San Francisco to see the company’s new products and hear talks from company officials.

Though other Oracle executives offered presentations in Ellison’s stead, some attendees left, expressing disappointment over the snub.

Ellison’s Oracle Team USA claimed victory in two races on Tuesday. The team is battling rival Emirates Team New Zealand to capture the top prize in the 162-year old contest. Though the Oracle team was widely thought to be losing the competition, Tuesday’s wins have put it back in the race.

Shares of Oracle rose almost 1% in Wednesday morning trading.
