PlayStation 4 Won’t Be Available Til After Holidays in Japan

It will launch in the U.S., Canada and Europe in November

sony playstation 4 630Video game enthusiasts in Japan will have to wait a little longer to get Sony‘s (SNE) new console.

On Monday, a Sony executive said that the Playstation 4 will hit Japanese retailers on February 22. That means the console won’t debut until after the critical holiday shopping season. It also means that Japanese consumers will have to wait months longer than their counterparts in Europe and North America, the Associated Press notes.

Sony unveiled the new Playstation earlier this year. It will compete with rival Microsoft‘s (MSFT) new Xbox One console, which will launch in the U.S. on November 22.

The Playstation 4 will hit North American store shelves on November 15, priced at $399. It will start selling in Europe two weeks later on November 29.

According to the Sony executive, the Japanese launch delay is due to Sony’s effort to line up an array of gaming titles in time for the launch. That is apparently taking longer than expected.

Shares of Sony climbed more than 1% in Monday morning trading.
