On Thursday, Sony (SNE) said that it hopes that consumers around the world will buy at least 5 million PlayStation 4 consoles by March.
That marks the first time that the Japanese electronics giant has publicly announced a sales target for a new flagship console. By contrast, sales of the PlayStation 3 hit just 3.55 million between its November 2006 launch and March 2007, the Wall Street Journal notes.
Sony’s sales target is considered especially ambitious given that the PlayStation 4 won’t reach Japanese consumers until February. Still, the company is betting that the new console will draw interest from a greater range of consumers, not just hard core gamers.
An mobile app for devices running Google‘s (GOOG) Android and Apple‘s (AAPL) iOS will launch in November, permitting users to use their smartphones with some PlayStation 4 games.
The PlayStation 4 will compete with Microsoft‘s (MSFT) next-generation Xbox One console, which is priced higher than the Sony console, but is designed serve as an entertainment hub as well as game platform.
Shares of Sony fell about 1% in Thursday morning trading.
