Starbucks (SBUX) may be preparing to launch a new product.
Earlier this month, the popular coffee shop chain operator filed an application to trademark the name “Fizzio.” According to the trademark application, “Fizzio” would apply to “machines for the production of beverages, LegalForce notes.
The application suggests that the machine could produce milk-based beverages, coffees, milk-based beverages containing fruit juice, chocolate milkshakes, teas, iced beverages or sparkling water beverages.
Starbucks joins Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR), which filed a trademark for its own soda machine back in July, Bloomberg notes.
Soda machines from Starbucks and Green Mountain would compete with Israeli manufacturer SodaStream International’s (SODA) popular home carbonation device. SodaStream recently partnered with a major appliance maker to develop a new line of carbonation devices for consumer kitchens.
Shares of Starbucks in rose modestly in Wednesday morning trading, while SodaStream climbed almost 1%.
