The 2013 Emmys were filled with upsets as surprising winners were announced.
Jeff Daniels won best actor in a drama for his role in The Newsroom. He beat out Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston for the Emmy. The Voice won an Emmy for best reality-competition series. It beat out The Amazing Race, which has only lost in that category twice. The Daily Show has won an Emmy for best variety series for the last 10 years, but that ended this year as The Colbert Report won that Emmy. Other surprises included: Bobby Cannaval winning best supporting actor in a drama for his role as a mob gangster in Boardwalk Empire, Tony Hale winning best supporting comedy actor for his role in Veep and Merritt Wever winning best supporting comedy actress for Nurse Jackie, reports USA Today.
Also surprising at the Emmys was that Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, and House of Cards all went home without winning any awards, despite being nominated in many categories.
