If you love tennis, there are a number of retirement locations that rank as some of the best in the nation.
Some great spots often depend on weather and other tennis lovers in the area. The best places to retire for tennis may even be right in your own backyard.
We examined a variety of the nation’s Best Of lists based on weather, activities for retirees, and of course area leagues and the number of courts or tennis players in the region.
Here are the Top 5 places to retire in the United States if playing tennis is your sport. (And if you have a recommendation of another great locale, add your thoughts in the comments below.)
With tennis leagues aplenty and more forming every day (USTA, Ultimate Tennis, K2, Visionary), Atlanta beckons with mild winters for continuous play and Southern hospitality which makes for making friends fast. And let’s not forget the Atlanta Open each year. With a number of stunning communities just outside the city, you’re able to enjoy city living when you want it and a quiet retreat when you need it.
San Diego, California
With year round near perfect weather and climate, San Diego offers terrific public facilities and private posh clubs where hanging out and enjoying the games are just part of the afternoon. The only issue is that there are too many to choose from! The city hosts multiple tournaments throughout the year for those who want to up their game.
This upscale community just outside D.C. has some of the most tennis players per capita. And if you’re not satisfied with the great tennis at some of the most remarkable country clubs in the country, just head into D.C. for an ever wider selection.
How could we have a Best Of for tennis, and not mention at least one city in Florida. Tennis players hit the courts year-round in this Gulf-side city. Some courts even have views of the water. The city offers a slowed-down pace with great restaurants and amazing golfing as well. What more could you ask for, besides living in a place that doesn’t have pension or social security tax? Oh yeah, excellent.
Charleston, South Carolina
Regularly voted as one of the nation’s best places to retire for tennis lovers, Charleston offers nearly 600 public and private courts, the annual Family Circle Cup women’s pro event and weather than makes it one of the best. As the United States Tennis Association noted in its 2010 award to the city, “the city has more than 13,000 local tennis players who take to the courts every year, including more than 7,500 who play USTA League tennis.”
