Violent Sea Lions Attacking People, Pets in U.S. Beach Town

One dog was killed by sea lions

California sea lions are acting hostile toward humans and pets in Westport, Wash.

The sea lions have been attacking people and pets in their search for food. The animals have been fed by locals and tourist and are now bothering people for food. In one case a sea lion dragged a small dog into the water and killed it. Some people are also reacting in a hostile manner to the sea lions. Two sea lions were found along a beach with bullet fragments in their skulls. The Westport Aquarium warns that the situation could get worse. It tells citizens to look at what happened in Astoria, Ore., when 100 sea lions turned into 700. The Aquarium has obtained a $10,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It plans to use the grant to post flyers and educate people about the danger of feeding sea lions. The Aquarium says that while its is illegal to feed sea lions, many ignore the posted warnings, reports Katu.com.

Dead fish left by fisherman are also part of the sea lion problem.

“There is a tremendous amount of animosity between the fishermen and what’s going on with the Sea Lions,” Marc Myrsell, co-owner of the Westport Aquarium, told Fox News. “The carcasses need to be collected or there needs to be a place where fishermen can bring the carcasses and then somebody else takes them away.”
