Volkswagen vans, the iconic vehicles that have carried hippies and surfers since the 1960’s, will no longer be manufactured starting Dec. 31.
Brazil, the last country that still makes the vans, will no longer make the van due to new safety regulations. The new regulations require vehicles to have airbags and anti-lock braking systems starting in 2014. Volkswagen is ending the production of the van, also called the Volkswagen Bus, because it can’t meet these new requirements. Even though production of the vans will end, people will still see them around. Volkswagen produced more than 10 million of the van globally, with 1.5 million having been produced in Brazil, reports the Associated Press.
Volkswagen is releasing a “Last Edition” of the van that will feature curtains in the windows and an MP3 radio with a USB port.
