We Will Never Forget 9-11

America has bounced back, but will always remember the date

In lieu of my usual post, I want to take a moment to remember what happened 12 years ago, especially the people who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks, the brave first responders, and everyone who was impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. I personally lost friends and colleagues who worked in the investing and banking offices in the twin towers. My thoughts are with the memories of those fine folks and their families.

A lot has happened in the past twelve years. The country has pulled itself out of two major recessions, two wars, and two tumultuous elections. Right next door to Wall Street, the western hemisphere’s largest skyscraper—One World Trade Center—now stands in the place of the Twin Towers.

I’m encouraged to see so much progress since that terrible day. You probably remember how people were in shock after 9-11, so American businesses, consumers and financial markets ground to a standstill. It was enough to drag the U.S. economy back into a recession that lasted for years.

And while we’re facing a new batch of uncertainties in this decade, it’s great to see how far both Main Street and Wall Street have come. The S&P 500 finished up Wednesday for the seventh day in a row. 10-year Treasury notes just attracted the highest demand in six months.

So while we all take a moment to reflect on what we have lost, we should also note how much we have regained through sheer hard work and persistence. We’ve shown the terrorists that the American spirit is stronger than any attack. I’m so proud to be part of a country that has accomplished so much in the past twelve years, setting an example for the rest of the world for how to respond in the face of tragedy.

As was said at the time: “We will never forget.” We honor the victims of 9-11 by remembering them in a special way today in particular, and more so by the way we live our lives each and every day to keep America the greatest country on earth.
