Xbox Music Available Free to All Web Users

It will release iOS and Android apps for paying subscribers


Microsoft MSFTBeginning on Monday, all web users can listen for free to Microsoft‘s (MSFT) Xbox Music streaming service. The new service was originally intended only for use by Windows 8 users, but the company has now expanded that to other operating systems, the Associated Press notes.

Microsoft will release apps for mobile devices running Apple‘s (AAPL) iOS and Google‘s (GOOG) Android operating system that will allow subscribers to access the service on the go. Listening to Xbox Music on mobile devices will require a $10-a-month subscription.

Xbox Music was the default music player in Windows 8 and was meant to drive more consumers to both the new OS and to Microsoft devices. However, Windows 8 have been softer than Microsoft had hoped.

The Windows-maker announced last week that it would acquire handset maker Nokia (NOK) for $2.7 billion.

Apple is expected to launch its own music streaming service, iTunes Radio, later this fall.

Shares of Microsoft rose almost 1% in Monday morning trading.
