The new service was originally intended only for use by Windows 8 users, but the company has now expanded that to other operating systems, the Associated Press notes.

Xbox Music was the default music player in Windows 8 and was meant to drive more consumers to both the new OS and to Microsoft devices. However, Windows 8 have been softer than Microsoft had hoped.

The Windows-maker announced last week that it would acquire handset maker Nokia (NOK) for $2.7 billion.

Apple is expected to launch its own music streaming service, iTunes Radio, later this fall.

Shares of Microsoft rose almost 1% in Monday morning trading.
