Amazon Rolls Out Perk Program for Select Apps

Amazon (AMZN[1]) is releasing a rewards program as an incentive for its customers to buy more apps from the company’s Appstore Developer Select program.

CNET reports that consumers can buy apps[2] through the online retailer’s store and they’ll get Amazon Coins which can later be used as store credit. Additionally, Amazon is encouraging developers to create good tablet apps for Android by promoting the best ones. The company will take apps that are well-done and glitch-free and put them in a special place of its app store.

Amazon is looking to compete with Apple (AAPL[3]) with this initiative as its app store only has about 100,000 apps compared to the 375,000 iPad apps out there. The retailer is also making waves in the video streaming market as it is coming out with a web streaming box[4] in time for the holidays.
