American Girl dolls will take a giant step into Canada next year.
Canadian consumers will be able to purchase the popular Mattel (MAT) line of dolls through catalogs sent by mail and at two boutiques located inside Indigo Books & Music stores in Toronto and Vancouver, which will open in early 2014. An executive for American Girl said that the doll’s “growing demand” drove the decision to expand into the Canadian market, Bloomberg notes.
Currently, American Girl dolls are sold through catalogs, a website and at 15 American Girl branded stores in the U.S. The dolls are priced over $100, but account for 8% of Mattel’s overall sales. In the last quarter, American Girl sales jumped 20% over the prior year, hitting $122.3 million.
Shares of Mattel rose slightly in Wednesday morning trading.
