A 3-year-old girl who was born with the AIDS virus may be cured but doctors are not ready to say that for a fact yet.
The Associated Press reports that doctors are unsure whether or the Mississippi baby was born with the disease or whether she simply tested positive because she was exposed to her mother’s blood which was infected with AIDS. The toddler’s case — which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine — said the girl was infected in the womb after all. The baby was treated aggressively and she has not shown any signs of AIDS despite the fact that she stopped taking medicine 18 months ago.
Doctors say that this is a rather unusual case and they’re being very cautious to say that she is cured. Nevertheless, they believe that the girl is in clear remission and there is a chance that she could live the rest of her life without relapsing.
