TSA Security Faulted As Boy Takes Delta Flight to Vegas Without Ticket

A 9-year-old boy was somehow able to get past Transportation Security Agency guards and board a Delta (DAL[1]) flight from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Las Vegas without a ticket.

And now TSA officials are wondering how exactly that happened[2] on the Delta flight.

“I’ve worked at the airport for 13 years, and we have more than 33 million people go through the terminal every year, and I’ve never heard of anything like this happening before,” Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Patrick Hogan told a CBS reporter.

From TV station WCCO:

WCCO contacted the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) Sunday morning, during which a spokesperson said staffing is currently low due to the number of employees furloughed in the wake of the federal government shutdown.

They just did not check him for a ticket, apparently. The incident happened on Thursday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, with the boy taking Delta Flight 1651, which left for Las Vegas at 11:15 a.m.

It wasn’t until the flight was already in the air that flight attendants realized there was no unaccompanied minor scheduled to be on the flight.

“We’re investigating … and looking into our part to see what occurred and what didn’t occur,” said the TSA spokesperson.
