jonbenet ramsey[1]Almost two decades after a 6-year old beauty queen was found murdered in her parents’ home, grand jury documents in the case have been made public[2].

The 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey quickly drew international attention, with suspicion for the little girl’s death eventually focusing on her parents. Documents released by a Colorado judge show that a grand jury voted in favor of pressing charges against John and Patricia Ramsey in 1999, CNN notes.

JonBenet was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her home after her parents reported her missing. They claimed to have discovered a  note demanding $118,000 in ransom.

The grand jury — which consisted of eight women and four men — poured over 30,000 pieces of evidence and testimony from dozens of witnesses for 13 months before voting in favor of charges. However, the local district attorney declined to pursue the case. With no charges filed, the grand jury proceedings had remained sealed for more than a decade.

The girls parents steadfastly insisted that they had nothing to do with their daughter’s death. A later analysis of DNA found on the child’s body ruled out any family member.

No one has ever been charged in the murder of JonBenet.
