South Korean consumer electronics makers are hoping that flexible displays will attract smartphone buyers.
LG says it plans to launch smartphones featuring the “world’s first flexible OLED [organic light-emitting diode]” screens in 2014. Non-flexible OLED screens are currently found in a number of smartphones from various manufacturers and curved OLED panels have been adapted for television sets, the BBC notes.
The flexible OLED screens for smartphones will curve from top to bottom, rather than from side to side, be “bendable and unbreakable” and will permit a new range of design options for handsets, LG said in a statement.
Rival manufacturer Samsung announced plans for flexible OLED smartphones screens several weeks ago.
Whether consumers will be enticed by flexible screens remains to be seen.
Last month, Samsung unveiled its new smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, which links with other mobile devices via Bluetooth.
