Mastodon Mystery: Extinct Elephant Tooth Found in Donation Box

A charity located in Michigan found a mastodon tooth[1] in a donation box.

The Christian charity, called In The Image, collects donated items for low-income residents. The tooth was found when the charity went to pick up donations inĀ Grand Rapids in July. The box contained a mastodon tooth that was broken in to two parts and a tusk that is hollow in one end. The tusk has not been confirmed to have come from a mastodon. Both of the items were covered in lacquer and are estimated to be anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 years old. The charity turned the two items over to theĀ Grand Rapids Public Museum, which will be adding them to its collection. The museum already has a number of mastodon items, which it loans out to schools so that teachers can using them as learning tools. The mastodon tooth isn’t the only strange thing that the charity has found. It also once found a painting that was worth $5,000, which it also donated to the museum, reports the Associated Press.

The charity stopped at about eight houses[2] on the day that it picked up the mastodon tooth, but it didn’t check the boxes on pickup and doesn’t know who donated the item.
