Photos of Olivia Culpo putting on a pair of red high-heeled shoes and standing on a bench have caused outrage in India.
The images of the 21-year-old holder of the Miss Universe crown were taken at the nation’s iconic Taj Mahal. Indian authorities were particularly incensed by images showing the shoes sitting on top of the Diana Seat, the bench where the late Princess Diana was photographed more than two decades ago, the Daily News notes.
India has specific rules governing the taking of images around the famed monument.
Putting the shoes on the bench “amounts to disrespect and insult,” according to one monument caretaker.
The police apparently agree and have filed charges against Culpo, a former Miss Rhode Island, who visited the Taj Mahal as part of a 10-day visit to the country, and members of her entourage. While they could face up to two years on jail and fines of $1,600, if found guilty, authorities say that they would most likely just be fined.
Responding to the controversy, the Miss Universe Organization has apologized door “any unintentional harm our indiscretion and insensitivity may have caused.”
