Mother of Greece’s Blonde Mystery Girl Maria Identified

4-year-old girl was given away by mother who couldn't afford to raise her

A mysterious girl found in Greece known as Maria has been confirmed as the daughter of a 35-year-old woman from Rome.

Fox News reports that Bulgarian authorities confirmed the relationship between 4-year-old Maria and her Bulgarian mother Sasha Ruseva with a DNA test. Ruseva said that she gave birth to the child four years ago in Greece when she was working as an olive picker and had to give her away because she couldn’t support the child.

Maria was found and raised by a Gypsy couple after Ruseva told them she couldn’t raise her and the couple had been in jail for child abduction charges. Although they maintain their innocence, Greek law states that child abduction charges may apply to a minor that is voluntarily given away by its parents outside of the necessary legal channels of adoption.

The Gypsy couple is awaiting trial for the abduction of Maria.
