Mark Burnett, creator of Survivor and The Voice, announced on Thursday, that he is teaming up with Virgin Galactic to create a reality TV show that will send a person into space.
The new series will be called Space Race and it will have people competing in an unscripted elimination competition. The winner of the competition will get a ticket to ride Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo into space. The SpaceShipTwo is a two-pilot ship that can hold six passengers. The ship flies up to about 63 miles above Earth to give passengers a view of the planet from space and a few minutes of weightlessness. Tickets for a ride on the SpaceShipTwo currently cost $250,000 a person. NBC has yet to announce when the show will air or what format it will be in, but it did say that its production team has been given full access to SpaceShipTwo’s base for the show, reports Reuters.
Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to start rocket-powered test flights in May.
