State rules governing online gambling will go into effect on Oct. 21, a month before the trial period begins. Gamblers don’t have to be actual state residents, but must be physically located inside the state when they play.

The launch of Internet wagering in New Jersey comes as its Atlantic City casinos are facing dwindling traffic. The city’s casinos generated just over $3 billion in 2012, down from $5.2 billion in 2006.

Most of Atlantic City’s casinos have partnered with online gaming companies to offer Internet wagering including those owned by Caesars Entertainment (CRZ) and Tropicana Entertainment (TPCA).

In February, New Jersey became the third U.S. state to legalize online gambling, following Nevada and Delaware.
