Nokia Unveils Its First Tablet and Phablets

nokia storefront 630 300x200 Nokia Unveils Its First Tablet and Phablets[1]At an exhibition in Abu Dhabi, struggling handset maker Nokia (NOK[2]) unveiled new additions to its line of mobile devices[3].

The company took the wraps off two new smartphones — the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320 — each featuring a six-inch display, as well as its Lumia 2520, its first-ever tablet. Nokia says the super large-screen smartphones — generally known as phablets — will hold special appeal for business users who will find virtual keyboards easier to navigate on the bigger displays, BBC notes.

With four microphones, the Lumia 1520 is also expected to attract uses interested in using the phone to make high-quality video and audio recordings of special events. Both phones, which run on Microsoft‘s (MSFT[4]) Windows 8, also feature Nokia’s Refocus app, which allows users decide what elements of a picture to focus, and which to blur, after they have already snapped the image.

The Lumia 2520 tablet is powered by an ARM processor and uses Microsoft’s Windows RT operating system, which has struggled against tablets running Apple‘s (AAPL[5]) iOS and Google‘s (GOOG[6]) Android. In fact, Nokia is now the only company other than Microsoft[7] making Windows RT tablets.

Nokia’s new offerings come as the company’s hardware division is about to be purchased by Microsof[8]t.

Shares of Nokia rose almost 1% in Tuesday morning pre-market trading.
