Shoeless Indian Boys Win International Basketball Tournament

'The barefoot mice of Mexico' won all six of their matches

Trique Indian boys from the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca are getting international recognition after sweeping a basketball tournament without shoes.

The Huffington Post reports that these children are from a poor area of the country and they’re not accustomed to wearing shoes so they played the tournament barefoot. The Trique Indians won all six of their games to become International Festival of Mini-Basketball champions in Argentina. Some are calling the boys ‘the barefoot mice of Mexico’ due to their small stature.

The president of Mexico Enrique Pena Nieto spoke highly of the boys, saying that “the victories of the Trique Indian team from Oaxaca’s Academy of Indigenous Basketball make Mexicans proud.” The president of the International Basketball Federation-Americas — which organizes the tournament every year — said that the boys were the best players in the tournament and deserved winners.
