When TV commercials from Target hit the air in advance of this holiday shopping season, they will feature something they haven’t in a long time.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the discount retail chain will include prices for popular products in its ads — marking the first time it has done so since 2002. The move comes as retailers are bracing for what some expect to be a particularly tough holiday season amid an uncertain economy.
Target generates roughly a third of its sales from people with annual incomes under $50,000. Last month, it announced that it would hire 20% fewer workers for this year’s holiday shopping season, compared to last year.
This year more retailers will open on Thanksgiving itself or pre-Black Friday sales promotions.
A recent report indicates that a greater number of Americans are being more cautious about spending as worries over stagnant incomes and a lackluster economy mount.
Shares of Target slipped slightly in Thursday morning trading.
