The Top 5 Largest Private Landowners in the U.S.

The 2013 Land Report 100 has been released, and it ranks the 100 largest private landowners in the United States.

This year those private landowners brought 700,000 additional acres into their holding, according to CNBC, which is about 30 million acres (or 2% of the U.S. land mass).

The Top 5 largest land owners are listed below (via the 2013 Land Report).

5. The Irving Family (1.25 million acres)

The family — known for the Canadian company Irving Woodlands — owns large parcels of land mostly centered in Maine.

4. Brad Kelley (1.5 million acres)

With land in Florida, New York and Texas, Kelley keeps a host of rare animals on his land. His cash came from selling tobacco company Commonwealth Brands for $1 billion.

3. The Emmerson Family (1.86 million acres)

Patriarch Red Emmerson is the mind behind Sierra Pacific Industries — and land is his game. With his acres centered in California and Washington, the family company is California’s largest private landowner.

2. Ted Turns (2 million acres)

We know you were just waiting for his name to pop up. Yes, CNN’s founding father has land in some 12 states in the U.S. Some of his holdings include vast swaths of stunning acres in New Mexico. Until recently, Turner held the top spot.

1. John Malone (2.2 million acres)

Just recently the Liberty Media Corp. chairman added an additional 1 million acres in New Hampshire and Maine — which saw him leap to No. 1 and pass friend Ted Turner in the rankings.
