The nation’s largest retailer plans to add a little extra joy to some of its employees’ holiday seasons.
On Tuesday, Walmart (WMT) said it would promote 25,000 workers to positions with increased compensation and enhanced duties during the fourth quarter. Some employees who receive promotions will be congratulated in person by senior Walmart executives, who are visiting local stores today.
Walmart notes that it promotes roughly 160,000 associates every year. Last year, 40% of employees who received promotions had worked for the retailer for just one year.
Among Walmart store management staffs, 75% began their careers at the retailer as hourly-paid associates.
Earlier this month, a Michigan Walmart store fired an employee who became involved in an altercation in its parking lot after he said he came to the aid of a woman who was being assaulted.
Shares of Walmart rose slightly in pre-market trading on Tuesday.
