5 Worst Toys of the Year 2013

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) has announced the five worst toys of 2013[1].

The organization looked over 2013’s toys and found five toys that limited children’s creativity or promoted violence, sexuality and branded merchandise, reports eNews Park Forest.

• Monopoly Empire – Monopoly Empire takes Hasbro’s (HAS[2]) classic real-estate game and replaces everything with branded merchandise. All of the locations are now iconic brands and the tokens have been changed to include items such as McDonald’s (MCD[3]) fries or a controller from Microsoft’s (MSFT[4]) Xbox.
• Play-Doh Create ABCs App – The Play-Doh Create ABCs app removes all of the creativity found in a normal set of Hasbro’s modeling dough and replaces with a digital game with limited options. Children using the app are able to create animals, but they aren’t allowed to modify the animals by moving pieces of them around.
• The Real Tooth Fairies VIP Upgrade Membership – The VIP upgrade on this online website cost $59.90 a year and has girls selecting outfits and applying make up to their faeries. The game also allows girls to make fun of a fairy wannabe that doesn’t embrace fashion norms.
• Imaginext Mega Apatosaurus – Imaginext Mega Apatosaurus, made my Mattel’s (MAT[5]) Fisher Price, allows kids to play with dinosaurs that are carrying heavy artillery into battle. The dinosaur is battery powered and and handles roaring, moving and firing its weapons on its own.
• iPotty – The iPotty is a potty training seat that comes equipped with a screen to hold an Apple (AAPL[6]) iPad. The seat makes it so that parents can leave their child to use the bathroom without having to worry about them getting bored.
