About 400 homes in Willard have been evacuated, according to city officials. The local fire department was notified that styrene monomer was spilling from a four-inch hole in a 26,000-gallon railway tanker car owned by CSX (CSX) at the city’s rail yard at 11:42 p.m. on Tuesday evening, the Marion Star noted.

CSX sent clean-up personnel to help local public safety teams at the scene of the spill.

Residents displaced by the leak of the highly flammable substance have been offered temporary shelter at a local high school.

Homes with a half mile radius of the rail yard were evacuated. Local officials said on Wednesday morning that the leak would require several additional hours to cleanup.

A Willard officials noted that there had been a minor derailment earlier on Tuesday, but could not confirm if the leak was linked to that event.

Shares of CSX rose modestly in Wednesday morning trading.
