Michael Bloom has been the chief operating officer at discount retail chain Family Dollar (FDO) since 2011, and reportedly made about $3.5 million last year. Apparently, however, his talents weren’t good enough to keep a job in the company’s warehouse.
Donning a disguise, Bloom took a job at the Virginia warehouse as part of CBS’s (CBS) reality show Undercover Boss, in which top executives take low-level jobs at the companies, followed about by cameras, of course. Unfortunately for Bloom, he proved a less-than-able forklift driver, leading his supervisor to fire him, the Daily Mail notes.
During his short turn as forklift operator, Bloom made a number of operational errors, some of which could have posed a safety threat to other workers. His supervisor, who was purportedly unaware of Bloom’s true identity, finally told him that his lack of forklift skills meant that he had to be let go.
While Bloom seemed a little surprised to be canned, at the end of the show he met with the supervisor, promoted him and offered to pay a sizable chunk of the man’s credit card debts.
‘It’s a little embarrassing,” Bloom said on the show, “but I’m glad to see that he takes safety so seriously.”
Shares of Family Dollar were flat in Tuesday morning trading.
