Hallmark Has No Plans to Pull Ornament That Changes ‘Gay’ Lyric

Hallmark admitted that it shouldn’t have changed the lyrics[1] to a holiday classic on one of its ornaments.

The ornament is a miniature version of an ugly Christmas sweater that includes lyrics from the Christmas classic Deck the Halls. Hallmark made some changes to the lyrics so that they now read “Don we now our FUN Apparel,” instead of “Done we now our gay apparel.” The greeting card company was accused of making political statements and of being homophobic by critics posting about the ornament on Facebook (FB[2]) and Twitter. Some people even went so far as to claim that they won’t be purchasing anymore Hallmark merchandise because of the change. At first Hallmark defended the change it made to the Christmas song’s lyrics, but on Thursday the company admitted it was wrong of it to make the change. Despite admitting it was wrong to change the lyrics, Hallmark says that it has no plans to stop selling the ornaments, reports the Associated Press.

Hallmark claims that production and shipping schedules would make it impossible[3] for the company to recall the ornaments and change back the lyrics.
