Instagram Blocks Searches for Some Drugs Due to Illegal Sales

Facebook’s (FB) Instagram has blocked searches related to the suspected illegal sale of drugs through its channels.

BBC reports that the social media network made this decision after an investigation by #BBCtrending — a new social media series — showed that many were using the website to advertise narcotics. Instagram responded by blocking certain searches and issuing a statement saying that this activity violates the website’s policies. The social network added that its purpose is to share photos and videos and nothing else.

In its investigation, BBC found several prescription and illicit drugs being advertised on Instagram including marijuana, Xanax, MDMA and others. Instagram encourages its users to report photos or videos that involves potential drug use or the sale of narcotics.
