The newest superhero from Disney‘s (DIS) Marvel Comics is a Muslim teenager who can shape-shift.
Kamala Khan is the latest incarnation of Ms. Marvel, who was first introduced in the 1960′s. The company’s Editor-In-Chief described the new character as “a 16-year-old girl from the suburbs who is trying to figure out who she is and trying to forge an identity” while grappling with superpowers, BusinessWeek notes.
The daughter of Pakistani immigrants, Khan calls Jersey City home and can stretch her arms and legs and take on different shapes.
Marvel is looking to broaden the appeal of its cast of superheroes by introducing characters from diverse backgrounds. A Marvel editor said Khan will allow the comic series to “explore the Muslim-American diaspora from an authentic perspective.”
Last year, Time Warner‘s (NYSE:TWX) DC Comics launched a new series in which long-time superhero the Green Lantern is gay.
