Fox News reports that United Methodist Rev. Frank Schaefer of Lebanon pleaded not guilty to charges of conducting a same sex union in Massachusetts in 2007. Schaefer could face nothing more than a minor punishment but he could also lose his minister’s credentials if found guilty.
The Methodist Book of Discipline considers gay marriage to be incompatible with its Christian teachings and members of the church have condemned the pastor for his actions. However, the Reverend’s attorney — Rev. Robert Coombe — says that Schaefer was not acting out of rebellion but out of love for his son.
Dozens of Schaefer’s supporters have shown up outside the trial with signs, rainbow stoles and singing hymns.
