The bluegrass song ‘Rocky Top’ has long-been inspirational to many including Dolly Parton, Glenn Campbell and the Osborne Brothers.
The Associated Press reports that a Tennessee county commissioner is trying to give the Rocky Top name to a small town currently known as Lake City. The commissioner is hoping that the name will benefit the impoverished, 1,700-person town because of the song’s popularity and the fact that Rocky Top also happens to be the University of Tennessee Volunteers’ fight song.
The popular song was written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant in 10 minutes back in 1967. They were inspired by the actual Rocky Top which is part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park located over 5,400 feet high on the Appalachian Trail.
