A source tells CBS San Francisco that a floating barge in the city’s harbor is actually a super-high end showroom designed by Google (GOOG) to show off new products to VIP customers.
Featuring three floors of retail and demonstration space, the floating showroom features has a party deck, allowing Google to host events for upscale clientele. The structure on the barge is composed of 40-foot shipping containers, which can be disassembled and transported anywhere Google wants to set it up, via truck or boat.
Google has been working on the showrooms for more than a year as part of a bid to best rival Apple’s (AAPL) highly successful retail store efforts. The barge began to draw public attention last week. It hopes to use the showrooms to promote new products like its new Google Glass head gear.
Recent rumors indicate that the company is said to be boosting production of Google Glass units prior to next year’s expected launch.
