Codie Thacker didn’t like the number she drew at a regional cross country championship and refused to run with it.
The Kentucky teen from Whitley County High was assigned 666 as the number on the bib she was to wear during the race. However, wearing that number — which is widely associated with the Devil — contradicted her religious beliefs. Race officials declined a request to assign her a new number, USA TODAY notes.
Officials in charge of the race later said they were unaware that Thacker’s objection was based on religious grounds, a claim that is disputed by others.
Thacker opted to withdraw from the race rather than wear the unholy number. “I didn’t want to risk my relationship with God and try to take that number,” she told a local TV station.
