Coming Soon: Early next year, Apple (AAPL[3]) will launch an iPad with an even larger display to counter bigger-screen tablets from rivals[4], the Korea Times notes. A “first-tier display supplier” is currently manufacturing 12.9-inch Retina screens for the bigger iPad, which is expected to launch in early 2014. The larger iPad screen will feature resolution similar to ultra-high definition displays. Samsung is reported to be producing screens between 10 and 13-inches wide for its Galaxy line of tablets, which competes with the iPad. During the third quarter, Samsung’s share of the tablet market climbed to 20.2%, compared to Apple’s 27.1%, a narrowing in favor of the South Korean electronics giant. Last month, Apple unveiled its next generation 9.7-inch iPad Air and a 7.9-inch Retina iPad Mini.

More is Less: Reviewers who have examined Apple’s new Retina iPad Mini say the tablet’s high resolution screen doesn’t produce as many colors as the iPad Air[5], AppleInsider notes. In fact, the Retina iPad Mini displays the same color range as the non-retina iPad Mini. A number of other tablets outperformed the Retina iPad Mini in tests, including the iPad Air, the fourth generation iPad and Google’s (GOOG[6]) Nexus 7. However, the lesser color range is expected to be a “non-issue” to most consumers who will likely not notice it.

Second Shot: A U.S. Appeals Court decision could spell bad news for some older Samsung products in the U.S.[7], Forbes notes. The appeals court ruled on Monday that a California court should reconsider Apple’s request for a ban on Samsung products found to infringe on six Apple patents. U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh denied Apple’s request for a ban on the devices last year. The appeals court said that Koh was correct in denying a ban based on the infringement of three Apple design patents, but “abused its discretion” when she rejected the requested ban over the violation of three utility patents. The two companies are currently battling it out in court over how much Samsung should pay Apple for the patent infringement. The judge has already awarded Apple $600 million in damages and the iPhone-maker is requesting an additional $379 million. The latest trial could reach the jury this week. Apple is expected to use the appeals court decision to bolster its ongoing litigation against Samsung in the U.S.
