What’s Behind the 2013 Butterball Turkey Shortage?

by Karl Utermohlen | November 20, 2013 2:09 pm

Butterball[1]Butterball — the nation’s largest producer of turkey — is experiencing a shortage of the juicy birds due to unforeseen circumstances.

A spokeswoman for Butterball said that some turkeys had trouble gaining weight[2] and the company is evaluating the situation to determine what’s causing this problem, according to The Baltimore Sun. The company produces about 1 billion pounds of turkey every year which adds up to 20% of the nation’s total production of the bird.

Nevertheless, a spokesman for the National Turkey Federation said that there should still be plenty of turkey to go around for Thanksgiving. Other companies such as poultry giant Perdue said that they have had no problems with their turkeys and they’ll be able to meet their customers’ demands.
