Lottery officials say that two winning tickets were sold for last night’s massive Mega Millions drawing.
The Mega Millions top prize had swelled to $636 million. But last minute ticket sales — up to 70% of tickets are bought the day of the drawing — could send it even higher. Mega Millions officials indicated that one winning ticket was sold at Jennifer’s Gift Shop in San Jose, Calif., while the other was sold at Gateway Newstands in Atlanta, Ga., Reuters notes.
Tuesday’s Mega Millions top prize is the second largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, second only to a March 2012 $656 million jackpot.
The winning numbers in last night’s Mega Millions drawing were: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and 7.
Holders of the winning Mega Millions tickets could opt for payouts over 30 years, or a lump sum of about $170.5 million per ticket — before taxes, of course.
Had there been no winners in Tuesday’s drawing, the Mega Millions jackpot could have ballooned to $1 billion by year’s end.
The jackpot had been growing steadily for weeks as a number of drawings passed without winners.
