Did Tim Cook just signal that Apple (AAPL) is about to launch a bigger iPhone?
The Apple CEO sent a holiday letter to employees in which he notes that the iPhone-maker has “big plans that we think customers are going to love” for the coming year. A number of tech commentators have jumped on the passage, suggesting that it heralds the launch of a larger-screen iPhone in 2014, MacRumors notes.
Recent rumors indicate that Apple has developed an iPhone with a 5-inch screen. Those rumors suggest that the iPhone 6 release date could fall in May 2014. If Apple has chosen an iPhone 6 release date in May, it would fall just eight months after the company launched the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, and represent a significant change to Apple’s product launch schedule.
However, an iPhone 6 release date in May would also allow Apple to more effectively compete with expected new smartphone offerings from rival Samsung. The South Korean electronics giant is expected to launch its Galaxy S5 early this year. The current Galaxy S4 is viewed by many analysts as the biggest competitor to the iPhone.
Recent reports that indicate an iPhone 6 release date in May, also suggest the new iPhone will feature a 20nm processors made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSM).
AAPL stock sank modestly in Tuesday morning trading.
