Dollar General (DG) is giving Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT) and other retailers a run for their money with its new grocery stores.
The Tampa Tribune reports that Dollar General has been doing well testing its grocery stores with fresh produce that rivals the price of stores like Walmart. The retailer only has about 100 stores around the country and it has made great strides over the last year. 14 of those stores are located in Florida where consumers have been flocking in to get fresh bananas and strawberries at a reasonable price.
Research firm Kantar Retail found that most grocery store staples such as eggs and milk are cheaper at the Dollar General grocery stores than at its competitors. The company’s expansion has surpassed the $1-dollar item that it was founded on and it now offers many popular consumer goods such as Oreos and Gatorade at competitive prices.
