Facebook Tests a ‘Sympathize’ Button When ‘Like’ Doesn’t Cut It

At a company event week, an engineer at Facebook (FB) said the social media giant has created a new way for users to express their opinion of content.

Facebook users have long been able to signal their support for something seen online by “liking” it. However, the “like” button has always seemed slightly inappropriate for materials conveying negative information, like the response to personal tragedies, natural disasters or routine mishaps, the Huffington Post notes.

The engineer indicated that Facebook has developed a “sympathize” button that would allow users to signal support for material that has a less positive aspect in a more appropriate fashion.

Facebook routinely holds brainstorming sessions called hackathons for its staff to try out new ideas. The “sympathize” button was shown off at one such meeting.

While the “sympathize” button apparently garnered approval among Facebook staffers, the button isn’t scheduled to be introduced to the website any time soon — if at all.
