The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its picks for the safest cars for 2014.
Topping the list of safest cars is Honda Motors (HMC), which earned eight spots on the list. Six Honda vehicles made it on the list of Top Safety Pick+. These models include the Honda Civic 4-door, Honda Accord (both the four and two-door models),Honda Odyssey, Acura RL and the Acura MDX.
Honda’s Civic 2-door and Acura TL made it on the Top Safety Pick list.
The IIHS uses a strict system to determine what the safest cars are. It also separates the car models into two categories: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. Here is what it takes for a car to make it on these list, as described by the IIHS.
TOP SAFETY PICK requires good performance in the Institute’s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and, for the first time, good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test introduced in 2012. The same level of performance in those tests, along with at least a basic rating for front crash prevention, is required for the higher accolade, TOP SAFETY PICK+.
39 vehicles made it on the IIHS’ list of safest cars for 2014. This is a dramatic decrease compared to last year’s 130 vehicles that made the safest cars list.
