A Georgia woman has been confirmed as the holder of one of two winning tickets in Tuesday’s massive $636 million Mega Millions drawing.
Mega Millions officials say that Ira Curry is the lottery winner from Georgia. Curry, who did not appear at the public announcement, indicated that she relied on family members’ birthdays to choose the winning set of numbers, along with the number 7, traditionally viewed as a lucky choice, ABC News notes.
Curry bought the ticket at Gateway Newstand in Atlanta. The lottery winner lives in Stone Mountain, Ga. She claimed a share of the jackpot worth $318 million.
Officials said the lottery winner has opted to take a lump sum payment. After the IRS has collected its cut, the lottery winner will receive $123 million.
A second winning ticket to the drawing was sold in California. That lottery winner has not yet come forward.
If no one had won the Tuesday night drawing, the jackpot could have swelled to $1 billion by Christmas Eve.
Changes to the Mega Millions game have caused jackpots to ballon in recent years, producing a string of jackpots with truly mind-boogling top prizes.
