Netflix (NFLX) is getting rid of a bunch of its streaming movies on New Year’s Day. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that new Netflix TV shows like Better Call Saul and Sense8 are coming next year. Plus, a bunch of new Netflix streaming movies will be added to start the year, and other new Netflix movies will trickle out during 2014.
Some of them were just in theaters a few months ago, others are a few decades old. But when you curl up on your couch ready for some Netflix streaming movies, does it really matter how old the flick is?
Of course not. You just need something to entertain you for the next two hours while you stuff handfuls of popcorn in your mouth. (It’s scientifically proven to make movies more enjoyable.)
With that in mind, here’s a list of some of the best Netflix streaming movies to watch when they come in 2014.
Gru and the minions made a huge splash at the box office this year with this Dreamworks (DWA) sequel, hauling in almost $100 million more than Pixar’s Monsters University. And Despicable Me 2 is sure to be one of the hottest new Netflix movies in 2014.
Steve Carrell is at his wacky best playing the aspiring supervillain, supported by former SNL superstar Kristen Wiig. But the real stars of the Despicable Me series are the minions — Gru’s Twinkie-like assistants who are never short on hijinks.
If you’re looking for the best Netflix streaming movies for your family, look for Despicable Me 2 on Jan. 6.
A decidedly more adult film, Amelie is part of the crop of movies being brought in to replace the outgoing Netflix streaming films in January.
Amelie stars Audrey Tatou as a whimsical Parisian citizen who sets out to add more whimsy to her life and help the people around her. It’s a remarkably fun and inventive film, with some beautiful shots of Paris along the way.
It might not be a new film, but Amelie joins the list of must-watch Netflix streaming movies in January.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt made his directorial debut with Don Jon, which will be available along with other Netflix new movie releases on Jan. 27.
JGL stars in the film (which he also wrote), as a young man trying to balance his relationships with his compulsive desire to watch pornography. It sounds like something that would appear on Cinemax late at night, but there’s a lot of humor and a lot of heart in this film (and a lot of shirtless shots of Joseph Gordon-Levitt … just sayin’).
If you’re looking for the best Netflix streaming movies to watch after Jan. 27, look no further than Don Jon.
This Star Wars parody is joining the list of new Netflix movies, and if you’ve never seen it before, here’s your chance.
The Mel Brooks film takes the basic premise of the original Star Wars film and kicks up the hyperbole, slapstick and literal humor. It might not be Brooks’ best comedy, but even an average showing from Brooks is worth your time.
Spaceballs joins the new movies on Netflix streaming on New Year’s Day.
The Spectacular Now had a limited opening earlier this year, so there’s a good chance you never even knew it was out. Thankfully, Netflix has you covered, and the film joins the list of Netflix streaming movies on Jan. 13.
The film follows a high school senior and the friendship that changes his philosophy on life. It’s a familiar, vague description, but the movie is neither. It’s good enough to make you forget that Shailene Woodley first broke out in the much-maligned show Secret Life of the American Teenager. If you liked 500 Days of Summer, you’ll like this movie. (If you didn’t like 500 Days of Summer, you won’t like this movie.)
The Spectacular Now went under the radar at the box office, but it’ll be one of the best Netflix streaming movies in January.
