Before the Pope – The Last 10 Time Person of the Year Winners

With Pope Francis being named Time’s Person of the Year 2013, we decided to a look at the last ten Time Person of the Year winners.
Pope Francis beat out many others expected to be in the lead — including political leaders. That’s likely because, in other Pope Francis news, the man continues to wow crowds and bring Catholics back into the fold.
Of course, the Time Person of the Year award has been seen as becoming more and more irrelevant — especially after its controversial 2006 Time Person of the Year award (see below).
So while a Pope Francis biography will mention this award, it’s more likely to note how the man began to bring Catholics back to the church.
Here are previous Time Person of the Year winners and reasons why they were given the honor.
Time Person of the Year 2013: Pope Francis
Seeing how the last pope was a former Nazi who critics say did nothing to stem the tide of anger against the ever-expanding molestation charges against Catholic priests, Pope Francis appears as a ray of light for many. It also doesn’t hurt that he kisses deformed believers, sneaks out to minister to the poor in the dead of night, asks that Catholics stop obsessing over gays and abortion, and pretty much looks like he’s your favorite grandpa.
Time Person of the Year 2012: Barack Obama
President Obama won the award already once before — but Time gave him the award again in 2012 for winning re-election under difficult circumstances still facing the country. But, readers wondered, was Mitt Romney really that hard to beat?
Time Person of the Year 2011: The Protestor
The Arab Spring brought about monumental change to the Middle East and North Africa — and Time gave its nod to protestors who helped spark a movement.
Time Person of the Year 2010: Mark Zuckerberg
This one got less of a Like! than Time expected — sure Facebook was everywhere and used by everyone, but amid the global financial crisis, it was a bit odd to focus on the frivolous.
Time Person of the Year 2009: Ben Bernanke
Did he save or doom the country? Survey says: We’ll see how it plays out. Time gave its award to the man who helped craft a way forward for the US amid economic uncertainty.
Time Person of the Year 2008: Barack Obama
A black man is president of the United States for the first time in its history. Enough said.
Time Person of the Year 2007: Vladimir Putin
Hurray for Mother Russia! President Putin gets the win for defying expectations — kidding! Everyone knew he was pulling strings to land himself back as Russia’s leader. Did he ever truly relinquish that power, anyway?
Time Person of the Year 2006: You
Hey there, you! You are so great. You. Oh, you. Did you know you are responsible for building the world wide web (that’s what Time called it!)? You, the individual content creator of … content. So, congrats. Your award is as meaningless as some say Time magazine is becoming.
Time Person of the Year 2005: The Good Samaritans
Led by Bono and Bill and Melinda Gates, Time gave its shout out to those who were making a global difference. Pretty sure this just made Bono seem even more like a prick, but that Red logo was everywhere, so, you know…
Time Person of the Year 2004: George W. Bush
How did he get re-elected again? An unpopular war, a divided nation, and those weapons… that weren’t weapons. Time gave its award to the man who seemed like the little engine who could — and did.
