2014 IIHS Car Safety Ratings: Best Small Cars

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its list of the safest cars for 2014.

Honda 2014 IIHS Car Safety Ratings: Best Small Cars  The list includes several different categories for vehicles, including small cars, SUVs and minivans.

Here are the requirements for cars to make it on IIHS’ safest cars list.

TOP SAFETY PICK requires good performance in the Institute’s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and, for the first time, good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test introduced in 2012. The same level of performance in those tests, along with at least a basic rating for front crash prevention, is required for the higher accolade, TOP SAFETY PICK+.

Honda Motors (HMC) topped the list when eight of its vehicles were rated as the safest.

Here are the small cars that made the Top Safety Pick+ list.

  • Honda Civic 4-door
  • Mazda 3
  • Toyota (TM) Prius

Here are the small cars that made the Top Safety Pick list.

  • Dodge Dart
  • Ford (F) Focus
  • Honda Civic 2-door
  • Hyundai Elantra
  • Scion tC
  • Subaru Impreza
  • Subaru XV Crosstrek

Several SUVs and minivans also made it on IIHS’ list of the safest cars for 2014.
