Friday Apple Rumors: Apple to Ditch iPhone 5c in 2014

Limited Run: Sources tell the Wall Street Journal that the end of the line is coming[3] for Apple’s (AAPL[4]) iPhone 5c. Apple introduced the colorful 5c in October alongside the flagship iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5c contained the same components found in the earlier iPhone 5 enclosed in a plastic casing, available in five colors. The sources told the Journal that Apple will unveil two versions of the next-generation iPhone this year. One version of the iPhone 6 will have a screen bigger than 4.5-inches, while the other will feature a screen above 5-inches. This is in line with other recent rumors that Apple will launch two iPhones this year and take a step into “phablet” territory with an iPhone featuring a screen above 5-inches. The sources also indicate that Apple will scrap the plastic cases used in the iPhone 5c in favor of metal cases. Apple will not include curved screens on its upcoming iPhones, the sources indicated. The new iPhones are expected to be released during the second half of the year.

Expanded: Apple is currently testing its next-generation Apple TV set top streaming box[5], 9to5Mac notes. The upcoming Apple TV set top box will include a refreshed operating system that its closer to Apple’s iOS for mobile devices. Some reports have circulated that Apple could include gaming capacity in the new Apple TV, which could lead to the creation of an App store just for Apple TV. The updated Apple TV set top box is expected to be launched during the second half of 2014.

Going Strong: Today marks the 30th anniversary of the introduction of Apple’s iconic Macintosh computer[6], AllThingsD notes. Apple’s late CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs showed off the first Macintosh on Jan. 24, 1984. The original Mac was the first commercially-marketed all-in-one computer, coming with a keyboard and a mouse. Though Apple’s mobile device business has now eclipsed its personal computer business, Apple executives insist that the Mac will continue to thrive in a “post-PC” world. Apple’s Mac shipments jumped during the final quarter of 2013, while overall PC sales continued to slump. Apple executives say they expect Macs to remain a vital part of the Apple ecosystem. Apple is marking the Mac’s anniversary on its website, including a video showing the computer’s evolution[7] over the last three decades.
