Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Diversity: When Apple (AAPL) unveils its next generation iPhone some time later this year, there will be more than one model of the new handset, GSMArena notes. Purported insider sources at Foxconn tell a Chinese media website that Apple will introduce two separate iPhone 6 models. One model will feature a 4.7-inch screen, while the second will enter phablet territory with a 5.7-inch screen. A variety of recent rumors suggest that Apple plans to boost the screen size of the iPhone with the next handset. The iPhone 6 will also feature the biometric Touch ID found on the iPhone 5s. Apple increased the iPhone’s screen size to 4-inches with the iPhone 5 and retained that size on the iPhone 5s. However, larger screen phones from rivals like Samsung have proven popular with consumers, putting pressure on Apple to offer an iPhone with a larger screen. Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that phablets come with ease-of-use compromises that Apple would have to overcome before it released a large-screen iPhone.
Costly: Analysts are trimming their earnings estimates for China Mobile (CHL) in the wake of its recently announced deal to carry the iPhone, the Wall Street Journal notes. The iPhone will begin reaching China Mobile customers later this month. In the short term, the addition of the iPhone is expected to increase the carrier’s costs due to rising phone subsidies. China Mobile saw its earnings fall between January and September. China Mobile profits are also likely to decline due to investments needed to roll out its 4G/LTE network, which is compatible with the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.
Transform: One analyst thinks that Apple is about to disrupt the enterprise market with a 12-inch iPad hybrid, AppleInsider notes. Evercore Partners analyst Patrick Wang expects Apple to launch the bigger iPad this fall. He says the new 12-inch tablet will be powered by a next-generation A8 processor and will be aimed at replacing laptop computers for business users. He thinks Apple will design the larger iPad to function as a hybrid device, working as both a notebook computer and a tablet. The new tablet could put additional strain on laptop and notebook sales, which have already eroded as tablet sales have surged.
